Four paintings by Marc Chagall brought the highest bids in an auction of 19th- and 20th-Century art in Tel Aviv last week, according to Sotheby’s auctioneers, who did not release the names of the sellers. An unidentified American collector paid $302,500 for a dreamlike “Still Life With a Vase of Flowers,” painted by the late Russian-Jewish artist in France circa 1955. Another unnamed collector paid $264,000 for Chagall’s “Moses Showing the Tablets to the Israelites,” a large gouache painted in about 1979.
