Local News in Brief : Girl, 5, Killed in Crash
A sideswiped sports car jumped a curb Thursday and ran down a woman and her children as they walked along a South Los Angeles sidewalk on their way to school, police said.
A 5-year-old girl was killed in the 7:45 a.m. accident. Her mother and two brothers were injured, the mother critically.
Maria Delatorre, 33, and the six children she was escorting to school tried to flee when the Datsun 280Z suffered a slight collision with a truck, jumped the curb and skidded toward them after bouncing off a building on South Main Street, Detective Robert Jimenez said.
The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
Delatorre suffered head injuries and was listed in critical condition at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Paula Wauls said.
The two boys, one 7 years old and the other 18 months old, were listed in good condition after treatment for cuts and bruises. The other children were not injured, police said.
The incident was under investigation.
