If you thought you heard “The Way It Is” a lot last year, ASCAP has this word: You’re right. The song licensing organization, which tracks radio, television and jukebox play, has named Bruce Hornsby’s first hit the most-performed song of 1987 (actually, the survey period is Oct. 1, 1986 to Sept. 30, 1987.) The other four tunes joining “Way” in the winners’ circle are “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” by Albert Hammond and Diane Warren, “Next Time I Fall” by Paul Gordon and Bobby Caldwell, “You Got It All” by Rupert Holmes and “Stand by Me” by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The awards were presented at ASCAP’s fifth annual Pop Awards Dinner Wednesday night at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
