Sports Briefs : CIF Student Athletes

The CIF Southern Section has recognized several Southeast/Long Beach area high school teams and athletes in the third annual California Angels/Ford Motor Co. Academic Awards Program. The Whitney High girls tennis team had the highest combined grade point average, 3.71, followed by the Whitney girls track and field team (3.57), the Whitney boys swimming team (3.55), the Wilson water polo team (3.49), the Whitney softball team (3.42), the Whitney boys basketball team (3.38) and the Wilson golf team (3.31).

Honored as boy student athletes of the year were Thomas Evans (3.91) of California High, Joe Risse (3.89) of La Serna, Michael Lafkas (4) of Wilson, Erick Westra (3.97) of Valley Christian and Jonathan Krause (3.56) of Whitney.

Girls honored were Tu Dung Nguyen (4) of California, Janet Tanasugarn (3.79) of La Serna, Margaret Swartz (4) of Wilson, Olga El-Bogdadi (3.94) of St. Joseph, Sharon Overduin (3.97) of Valley Christian and Tania Dutko (4) of Whitney.
