Taft Leads by 6 Shots in City Tournament
Led by senior David Solomon’s 2-over-par 73, Taft High took a 6-shot lead Tuesday after the first round of the 36-hole City Section golf championships at the Harding Course in Griffith Park.
Three players for defending-champion Taft (401) broke 80. El Camino Real, a member of the 4-A League and a long-shot in the tournament, is second at 407. Palisades, which upset Taft in the 5-A League tournament last week, struggled to fifth place at 430.
North Hollywood, led by Alex Woodson’s 75, is third at 408, followed by Granada Hills (416), Palisades, Birmingham (434) and Cleveland (451).
El Camino Real’s Jason Gordon, who fired a 3-under-par 34 on the front nine that included five birdies, is the low individual at 72. Tristen Taylor of Taft is in a three-way tie at 75 with Geoff Shackelford of Palisades and Gerald Wong of Eagle Rock. Other area players still in the individual race include Granada Hills’ Andy Chao and Taft teammates Roger Makemson (78) and Jim Venitos (79).
