Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis picked up more steam among Iowa Democrats, winning the bulk of delegates selected at congressional district conventions. Dukakis won 12 of the 34 delegates at stake, while backers of Missouri Rep. Richard A. Gephardt elected nine delegates who are technically uncommitted. Gephardt won the state’s Feb. 8 caucuses, but he has since dropped out of the race. Many of the nine uncommitted delegates are expected to endorse front-runner Dukakis. That group remained together to make it easier to elect their leaders to national delegate posts at the convention in Atlanta, July 18-21. Party leaders list them as neutral, although some insisted on carrying Gephardt’s banner. The Rev. Jesse Jackson won seven delegates, and Illinois Sen. Paul Simon, who has put his campaign on hold, collected six.
