Western-backed Angolan rebels said they killed 81 government soldiers and blew up a strategic bridge in the north. The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) said its guerrillas destroyed a bridge over the Luxico River last week in the diamond-rich northern province of Lunda, killing 13 soldiers. The rebels said they overran an army position at Caala in the central province of Huambo, killing 20, and drove government forces from a barracks at Babaera, killing 25. In the northern province of Uige, the guerrillas said, they captured the town of Cangola, killing another 23 soldiers.
