Debbie Dickmann of Cal State Northridge pitched a no-hitter and struck out 17 but was a 1-0 loser to Lock Haven (Pa.) State in 11 innings Friday night in the opening round of the NCAA Division II softball championships at Sacramento.
In accordance with tiebreaking rules in the tournament, a runner was placed on second to start every inning after the ninth.
Dickmann survived the 10th inning, but in the 11th, Vicki DiVittorio of Lock Haven was sacrificed to third and then scored on a squeeze bunt by Amie Zimmerman.
The squeeze was fielded less than halfway up the line by first baseman Pam Smith, who tagged Zimmerman in self-defense but could not make the throw to home.
Saturday, Dickmann extended her string of consecutive outs to 52 before giving up a fourth-inning single in CS Northridge’s 4-0 win over Northeast Missouri.
In a semifinal game that followed, Dickmann was the losing pitcher as CS Bakersfield beat CS Northridge, 2-0, to eliminate the defending champion Matadors.
