Wronged Writers

The Times does itself and its readers a disservice with its conspicuously biased coverage of the Writers Guild of America and our strike.

You have repeatedly taken rumors and disinformation from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and printed them as fact without bothering to get a statement from our Guild.

In particular, Calendar reported that 27 New York soap opera writers were going to quit the Guild and return to work. Had you bothered to check your facts, you would have found that there was a meeting of 12 members and six walked out, announcing that they would never leave the Guild. All in all, four writers have resigned the Guild out of a membership of 9,000.

Likewise, you took a meeting of 30 members who call themselves the Union Blues and reported it as a movement of 300 writers.

Most appalling of all is the collection of letters you printed about our strike (Calendar Letters, May 1). It seems that The Times has no interest in balanced coverage of the strike. I suggest you start looking at the information you are spoon-fed from the AMPTP with some healthy skepticism. Your credibility is on the line.
