Frederick Brown, whose big bright paintings mix biblical subjects, contemporary portraits and scenes of urban America, will be the first American artist ever exhibited in Beijing’s Great Hall of the National Museum of the Chinese Revolution. More than 500,000 people are expected to visit the June 1-21 exhibit to see the 100 figurative and abstract paintings in his show. Brown, a New Yorker who taught art in China from 1985-87, hopes his exhibit will open China’s doors to more expressionistic art. The museum documents Chinese history and culture since 1920, a year before the birth of the Chinese Communist Party.
