“Day by Day” is almost too awful for words. The preschool children on the show are rosy-cheeked cherubs who do nothing but laugh and cheer in unison. Most of the older characters strain so hard to be hip that it soon becomes a mere embarrassment. How does a program like this manage to get on the air? The program’s one bright spot is Julia-Louis Dreyfus. With her fast delivery and wicked grin, she gives the screaming laugh-track a run for its money and actually transcends the manic tedium surrounding the show.
