PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Davison Tourney MVP as Redondo Beats Gahr, 4-2

Almost two months later, the Redondo-Palos Verdes baseball tournament ended in much the same way it began: with a Redondo High victory.

Scott Davison, the victor in the Sea Hawks’ opening win against Downey, earned the victory again Saturday night with a four-hit, 4-2 victory over visiting Gahr.

Davison, who was named the tournament MVP, struck out 14 and walked just one to improve his record to 14-0, while the Sea Hawks raised their record to 26-1.

Two of Gahr’s hits were of the infield variety, and the game was close throughout. Redondo took advantage of Gahr errors to forge a 2-1 lead in the fifth and put two runs on the board in the sixth.

Davison said pitching in tight games actually gives him an edge.

“I think I get tougher in the closer games,” said Davison, who has a 44-5 record in his four years at Redondo. “With a big lead, you can get lackadaisical and a couple bad pitches can hurt you. I stay mentally tougher when the games are closer.”

The Sea Hawks scored in the second inning when Brian Davison walked and stole second. He reached third on Scott Davison’s hit and scored when Gahr pitcher Eric Fagen’s pick-off attempt went wild.

Gahr (18-5-2) tied the score in the second when Jesse Osuna scored on Brian Davison’s throwing error.

The Sea Hawks took the lead for good in the fifth when Brian Davison doubled, was sacrificed to third and scored on an error.

Redondo loaded the bases in the sixth and scored twice, once on Brian Davison’s ground out and on Jason Shiotsugu’s sacrifice fly.

Scott Davison said the Sea Hawks, the CIF 3-A top-rated team, need only to look to their next game for motivation. Redondo is tied with El Segundo for the Pioneer League lead and faces the Eagles twice next week.

“Playing El Segundo is motivation enough for us,” he said. “Knowing we have to beat them twice to get that No. 1 seed will be enough to motivate us.”
