Martin, Jackson South Coast Basketball Players of the Year
Darrick Martin of St. Anthony High School and Trise Jackson of Lynwood High are The Times’ 1988 basketball players of the year in the South Coast area.
Coaches of the year are Tom Roanhaus of St. Anthony and Carolyn Montgomery of Compton.
Martin, a 6-foot guard, averaged 33.4 points and 8.5 assists a game and was among the nation’s top players.
Jackson, a 5-7 guard who averaged 19.5 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists a game to lead Lynwood to the final four of the state Division I playoffs, was the California high school girls’ player of the year. She has signed to play at Cal State Long Beach.
Montgomery had another winning season and increased her nine-season record at Compton to 207-36. Six of her players have gone on to be All-Americans: Mandy Hannah at Nevada Las Vegas, Kim Thompson at UC Berkeley, Felicia Benson at Cal State Fullerton, Sheila Brown at San Jose State, and Kathy Gooden and Sonja Bracken at Cal Poly Pomona.
Roanhaus, who led St. Anthony to a 21-5 record, was a three-sport athlete at Hueneme High School. After graduating from Cal State Northridge, he was an assistant coach at Notre Dame High School of Sherman Oaks before going to St. Anthony.
Each honoree received a trophy Sunday at a brunch at the Anaheim Hilton Hotel.
