Local News in Brief : New Bus System Studied
- Share via
Pressing on with his controversial drive to break up the huge RTD bus system, Supervisor Pete Schabarum Tuesday won approval to study creation of a new transit agency to serve a section of Southeast Los Angeles County, possibly using private bus companies.
The 150-square-mile area to be studied stretches from Montebello to Lakewood and includes 23 cities and two large unincorporated county areas. The study is the first step toward formation of a new bus system by the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission.
Schabarum, arguing that private bus companies save money and provide better service, already has won approval for a new bus system in the San Gabriel Valley that is taking over Southern California Rapid Transit District service.
Supervisor Ed Edelman, an ally of RTD employee unions, opposed the latest proposal, saying further breakup of the RTD should be delayed until a full evaluation of the San Gabriel Valley bus system is completed.
