Tennis Roundup : A Weary Lendl Defeats Mansdorf
Ivan Lendl, weary from jet lag and lack of sleep, beat Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, Tuesday night in the opening match of the $500,000 AT&T; Challenge at Atlanta.
“I was pretty tired,” Lendl said. “I had only about six hours sleep the last two nights. The jet lag sort of got to me. I wasn’t there for the whole match.”
In the only other first-night match, Andres Gomez of Ecuador routed Mikael Pernfors of Sweden, 6-1, 6-0.
Fifth-seeded Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union rallied to defeat Robin White, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round of the $300,000 Toray Pan Pacific Open at Fujisawa, Japan.
Unseeded Dianne Balestrat of Australia upset No. 6 Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.
Top-seeded Andre Agassi downed Jimmy Brown, 6-1, 6-4, and Diego Perez stunned No. 3-seeded David Pate, 6-3, 6-1, in first-round play in the 78th annual U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships at Isle of Palms, S.C.
