Prep Roundup : Lung’s No-Hitter Leads Garden Grove Past Los Amigos
Senior Marc Lung pitched his first no-hitter of his career, striking out 10 and walking 6 to lead Garden Grove High School to a 4-0 Garden Grove League victory over Los Amigos Monday at Los Amigos.
Garden Grove is 4-11 overall, 1-7 in league play. Los Amigos is 4-14 and 1-7.
In other Garden Grove League games:
La Quinta 7, Rancho Alamitos 0--James Marquez pitched a one-hit shutout to lead La Quinta at home. Mark Ralston’s bases-loaded double, scoring three, was the game’s big hit.
Kennedy 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Winning pitcher Greg Hansell (5-1) struck out 11 and allowed just five hits to lead Kennedy (12-9, 6-2) at home.
In Angelus League:
Mater Dei 7, Pius X 2--Bill Brockschmidt (3-0) gave up four hits and struck out six at Pius X. Jason Gill went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Mike Basse and Larry Sutton each had two RBIs to lead the Monarchs (15-2, 7-2).
In the Empire League:
Katella 13, Cypress 2--Katella had 15 hits. Jess Evans (3 for 5) and Alan Acosta (2 for 4) each had three RBIs.
In Freeway League:
Sonora 5, Fullerton 4--Sonora’s Mitch Kaylor went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and the Raiders held off a seventh-inning rally at home.
Sunny Hills 11, Buena Park 2--Kevin Munson went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs to lead host Sunny Hills (8-11, 4-5). Ryan Frace (2-3) pitched five innings, striking out five, for the victory.
La Habra 4, Troy 0--Winning pitcher David Stevens (4-3) struck out 10 and came within two outs of a no-hitter. Troy’s Steve Trachsel got a single with one out in the ninth.
In South Coast League:
El Toro 10, San Clemente 2--Brian McNamara was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and one RBI and Tim Jurkowski had a home run in the second inning to lead the Chargers (11-9, 6-3) at San Clemente. Jeff Stark (3-2) pitched a two-hitter and struck out six for the victory.
In Sunset League:
Huntington Beach 3, Marina 2--Brian Mena went 3 for 4 with the game-winning RBI to lead visiting Huntington Beach (13-6, 4-5). Brad Walker scored from third with two outs in the seventh on Mena’s single.
In Sea View League softball:
University 20, Corona del Mar 0--Shareen Patton pitched a no-hitter as University defeated Corona del Mar, 20-0, at home.
Patton (10-4), a freshman, struck out 10. University got 11 hits and received 12 walks. Corona del Mar also made five errors.
Denise Gandana went 3 for 3 with four RBIs for University (10-5, 8-1).
Estancia 15, Newport Harbor 3--Estancia’s Kelly Kane went 2 for 3 with five RBIs to lead the host Eagles (4-8, 4-4).
In the Empire League:
Loara 1, Los Alamitos 0 (12 innings)--Playing under the international tiebreaker rule, Brandy Fields was placed at second, moved to third on Krinon Lopihuska’s single and scored on a wild pitch.
In the Freeway League:
Sunny Hills 4, Sonora 0--Shannon Brown homered in the fourth to lead visiting Sunny Hills (8-14, 2-1).
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 9, Anaheim 1--Winning pitcher Kelly Cook threw a one-hitter, striking out 11 to lead Brea (13-3, 3-1) at home. Brea’s Trisha Barr was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, including a three-run home run in the first.
In the South Coast League:
San Clemente 1, El Toro 0 (10 innings)--Wendy Shean scored from third on a wild throw to give San Clemente (13-6, 3-1) the victory at home.
Capistrano Valley 2, Irvine 1 (9 innings)--Sara Murillo scored on a passed ball with two outs in the ninth to lead Cougars (15-4, 3-1) at home. Freshman pitcher Jennifer Smith (14-4) gave up 6 hits and struck out 12 for Capistrano Valley.
Dana Hills 3, Mission Viejo 1--Jane Deffenbaugh gave up four hits and struck out seven for host Dana Hills (5-10, 1-3).
In Orange League golf:
Valencia 214, Brea-Olinda 224--Valencia (16-0, 8-0) won its 35th consecutive match at Alta Vista. Brea-Olinda’s Kevin Claborn was the medalist, shooting a two-over par 39.
In Pacific Coast League golf:
Laguna Beach 200, Costa Mesa 244--Senior John Gilles shot a par 32 to lead host Laguna Beach (10-3, 7-1) at Aliso Creek golf course.
In Orange League tennis:
Western 12, Brea-Olinda 6--No. 1 singles player Ed Peregrino won his matches, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, and teammate Jack Wei won, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, to lead Western at home.
In nonleague tennis:
Laguna Beach 11, Valencia 7--Host Laguna Beach snapped Valencia’s 13-straight win streak as the No. 1 doubles team of John Young and Lee Kirner swept their sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. Laguna Beach’s Jonathan Leach won his No. 1 singles sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to improve his season record to 45-0. Laguna Beach is 10-5. Valencia, top ranked in the 2-A, is 13-2.
