Boys’ Athletes of the Week : BASEBALL
The Chula Vista High School baseball team edged Castle Park on Thursday, 1-0, behind the pitching of Steve Trainor.
Trainor (2-2), a junior, threw a one-hitter as Chula Vista (7-9 overall, 4-0 in the Metro Mesa League) got its fifth straight victory. Castle Park (15-3-1, 3-1 in the Metro-South Bay League), is rated No. 5 in The Times’ top 10 poll.
“He’s getting better and better,” Chula Vista Coach Dick Barcus said of Trainor. “With him and Anthony Garcia, I feel we have the best one-two pitching punch around.”
Vista’s Jerry Stafford pitched a one-hitter and struck out four as Vista beat No. 3 Torrey Pines, 5-0, in a Palomar League game Wednesday.

Michael Stevenson of Morse won the 400 meters at the Sundevil Invitational Saturday with a time of 47.22 seconds--the fastest time ever run by a San Diego County high school runner. But Stevenson fell short of Tony Banks’ section record in the event, 46.98.
