Motorola Inc. unveiled a new line of microprocessor chips that use a simplified set of commands for extra speed The 88000 line of microprocessors is Motorola’s entry into a battle with Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Sun Microsystems Inc. and other companies that make or design the tiny chips that serve as the “brains” of personal computers and workstations. Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Ill., said its chip was up to five times as powerful as other chips based on the stripped-down principles of Risc, an acronym for reduced instruction set computer.
