Speakes Speaks for Reagan
What surprises me about former White House spokesman Larry Speakes’ revelation that he invented presidential quotes is that anyone would be surprised (Part I, April 12). Whereas contemporary Presidents have had their speeches written for them, reporters have revealed for all the world that President Reagan has even his casual utterances on cue cards.
It seems such a small step indeed that Reagan’s handlers, those masters of media manipulation, would find occasion to bypass the middleman in order to get their words out. How many of us have thought of wonderful things to say after we’ve left the party?
