College Baseball : Fullerton Defeats UNLV, 4-2, in Series Opener

Bobby Jones hit a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and Cal State Fullerton went on to defeat Nevada Las Vegas, 4-2, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game Friday at Fullerton.

Fullerton scored two more runs in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Mike Ross and a pinch-hit single by Rex Peters. Erik Silvey (2-0) pitched the final 1 innings for the victory. He had replaced starter Mark Beck in the seventh inning.

Fullerton (30-10, 8-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brent Mayne singled, went to third on a wild pickoff throw and scored on a ground out by Shane Flores. Mayne had two hits and extended his hitting steak to 22 game to tie the PCAA record.

Mayne, a sophomore catcher from Orange Coast, has a chance to break the mark tonight when the teams play at Fullerton at 7 p.m. The teams conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.

UNLV is 29-12, 8-2.

In another PCAA game:

UC Irvine 12, Cal State Long Beach 3--Senior Craig Brink (7-5) pitched his seventh complete game of the season and 22nd of his career for host Irvine (25-20-1, 4-6).

Jeff Oberdank had two hits, including a three-run double, for Irvine, which scored five runs in the eighth inning. Oberdank has 88 hits this season and is 11 shy of the single-season college record set by Mike Hirano in 1979.

Irvine’s John Seeburger had two hits and has hit in 8 of the last 9 and 27 of the last 30 games. He has 41 RBIs over the last 30 games also.

Donny Nicholson was 3 for 4 for Irvine; Long Beach is 11-34, 1-9. The teams play again tonight at 7 at Irvine.

In the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.:

Chapman 6, Cal State Los Angeles 3--David Bird struck out 10 in 8 innings and Jeff Kidwiler had a bases-loaded triple to lead Chapman (21-18-1, 10-7) at Hart Park, ending a four-game losing streak. Bird (7-3) allowed six hits and three unearned runs before giving way to Dave Cantrell, who picked up his first save. Kidwiler’s triple came in a four-run fourth inning that put the Panthers up 6-0. Bryan Beals was 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base. Right-hander Steve McGovern went the distance for Los Angeles (18-24, 9-9), allowing five hits and five walks while striking out one.
