Del Mar
An 8-year-old thoroughbred racehorse was killed shortly before 6 a.m. Friday when it was hit by a car after leaving its stall at the Del Mar race track, sheriff’s deputies said.
The horse, Huntley, was one of three that somehow got out of the barn.
Two of the horses wandered onto nearby Jimmy Durante Boulevard just north of San Dieguito Boulevard.
The driver of a northbound car, Thomas Walker Jr. of Del Mar, told deputies that he saw one of the horses in his headlights, swerved to avoid it, and hit the second horse.
The horse died at the scene shortly thereafter. Walker was not injured, but the roof and passenger side of his car were badly damaged, deputies said. Deputies said they did not know how much the horse was worth. It normally was kept at stables owned by developer Christopher Sickels of La Jolla.
