‘Applez-Moi Madame/Mix Up’
France, 1986, 115 minutes , 5:30 p.m . Documentarian Francoise Romance confronts seemingly absurd material with a camera quiet and still as an Erik Satie gymnopede. Here, two British babies scrambled at birth and raised by socially dissimilar families; and a French provincial transsexual, Ovida, living with a son and wife of 40 years. Ovida--resistance fighter, radical, prolific writer--seems an awful poet, but Romand’s quiet sympathy evokes a touching humor in his/her Cocteau-ish posturing. RECOMMENDED.
