Local News in Brief : Inquiry Into Toxic Waste
The discovery of toxic chemicals beneath a vacant Echo Park hotel is under investigation by a city environmental task force to determine if the chemicals pose danger to the nearby community, Los Angeles officials said Tuesday.

The discovery prompted the Los Angeles Men’s Place (LAMP), a social service agency, to abandon plans to buy the hotel and use it as permanent housing for the homeless mentally ill.
