Kentucky Football Team Accepts ‘Happy’ Chandler’s Apology for Slur

The University of Kentucky football team has accepted former Gov. A.B. (Happy) Chandler’s apology for a racial slur he made and will play in the Blue-White game, Wildcat Coach Jerry Claiborne said.

“We know Governor Chandler loves the University of Kentucky and the University of Kentucky football team. He wanted to hurt no one by his unfortunate remark,” Claiborne said.

Members of the football team had threatened to boycott the school’s traditional Blue-White spring football game if Chandler did not resign as a university trustee, but Claiborne said the game would be played as scheduled on April 23.

Friday, Chandler repeated his vow not to resign and said Kentucky football players were “stupid” if they boycotted the Blue-White game.

“If they’d spend more time learning how to play football, they’d be a damned sight better off,” Chandler said. “It hurt me because I didn’t know they were that stupid.”
