Controversy Over Meese
As a lifelong Democrat, I must say I am saddened at the way the Meese affair is unfolding. Lately, not only several staff members of the Justice Department and Democratic congressional leaders are calling for his resignation, but top Republicans too. Nevertheless. Meese and his firmest supporter, Reagan, refuse to be swayed.
His defenders point out that since he has not been criminally indicted, under our legal system he is innocent of any crime, and should continue in the job until proven guilty, or at least until indicted.
His detractors, like the undersigned, reply that the chief law enforcer of the U.S. government should be lily-white, beyond even the whiff of any scandal or wrong-doing.
So the rhubarb continues, and Meese besmirches the Justice Department, his President, and the country.
