UCSD Has Itself to Blame in 11-1 Loss

Walks and miscues by the UC San Diego baseball team helped The Master’s College score an 11-1 victory Thursday in Newhall.
Three Triton pitchers walked eight batters and hit four more. The Tritons also were guilty of four errors in dropping to 18-9 on the season.
UCSD’s Erik Judson went 2 for 2. Starting pitcher Rich Tomolonis (0-2) took the loss.
MEN’S TENNIS
J.R. Edwards, Dan Mattera, Mark Farren and Rick Matheson each won a match as the University of San Diego beat Chapman College, 5-2, in a nonconference match in Orange.
USD is 15-9. Chapman won the NCAA Division II title last year and was ranked No. 1 this year.
Kirk Edwards and Scott Del Maestro beat MiraCosta College’s Ali Colak and Eimei Ishida, 6-2, 7-5, to key Grossmont’s 5-4 victory and give the Griffins the Pacific Coast Conference title. Grossmont is 16-3 and 10-0.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The San Diego State University men’s 1988 basketball team banquet will be held April 19 at 6 p.m. in the Dover Room of the Hotel Del Coronado.
A no-host cocktail hour will be followed by dinner at 7. Tickets are $22.50 each, or a table of eight can be reserved for $180. For more information, call the Aztec Athletic Foundation at 265-5547.
FOOTBALL
The San Diego State University football coaching staff will host a coaches’ clinic on April 15-16 at SDSU.
In addition to the coaching staff, guest speakers will include Minnesota Viking special teams coordinator Tom Batta, Los Angeles Ram defensive secondary coach Steve Shafer, El Camino Community College Coach John Featherstone, Point Loma High School head coach Bennie Edens, and Mt. Miguel High School head coach Gary Cooper.
The clinic will begin on Friday at 1 p.m. with an open discussion with the Aztec coaches. On-site registration follows the discussion at 4. The guest speakers program begins at 5, and the day finishes with an Aztec scrimmage at 6:30.
Pre-registration forms are available from the football office and must be postmarked by April 9.
