POLITICS 88 : CAMPAIGN ’88 : Robertson Pursuing Delegates, Officials Say
- Share via
Pat Robertson is pursuing delegates to the Republican National Convention even though he has given up a serious contest for the GOP presidential nomination, Robertson campaign officials said.
Robertson has decided not to campaign in the New York primary, dismissed his Secret Service protection this week and has scaled back his public appearances, said Barbara Gattullo, a spokeswoman for Americans for Robertson in Chesapeake, Va.
Gattullo said the former religious broadcaster will make campaign appearances in California and Ohio.
Robertson has estimated he will go to the New Orleans convention in August with 150 delegates. So far, he has 17.
With those delegates, Robertson said, he will be able to bring a “strong conservative message” to the convention. That message would include adoption of a national platform that supports prayer in school, the strengthening of the American family and opposition to abortion.
