SAN DIEGO — The UCLA men’s eight-oared varsity shell was hit by an oar from the Navy shell less than a boat length from the finish but had enough momentum to win the Copley Cup by nearly two seconds in the 15th San Diego crew races Saturday.
Navy, which held a slight lead toward the end of the 2,000-meter race, was disqualified.
UCLA finished in 6 minutes 7.5 seconds, with Wisconsin second in 6:09.27 and Stanford third in 6:12.91.
In the women’s Whittier Cup competition, defending champion Washington was an easy winner in 7:02.38. Wisconsin was second in 7:09.58 and California third in 7:19.13.
The first major regatta of the season drew more than 70 schools and clubs and 2,000 rowers to Mission Bay.
