Lakers Sign Campbell as Thompson Replacement
The Lakers signed guard-forward Tony Campbell to a contract for the remainder of the season Wednesday and returned forward Billy Thompson to the injured list.
Thompson, who suffered a knee injury in the first round of the playoffs last spring, was not activated this season until Feb. 22. He played 38 minutes in 9 games, but team doctors believe the knee has not sufficiently healed.
Campbell, 6 feet 7 inches, played this season with the Albany Patroons of the Continental Basketball Assn., averaging 23.7 points a game, after three previous seasons with the Detroit Pistons. He played at Ohio State and was a first-round draft choice of the Pistons in 1984.
