Construction of a $2.7-million senior citizen center on South C Street is scheduled to begin today and be completed within a year, city officials said.
The 17,580-foot single-story center will house all of the city’s current senior citizen programs, according to Recreational Supt. Susan Jones. Several new programs are being considered, however, among them a day-care program, a surplus food program and support groups for victims of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
Jones estimated that the center will serve about 1,000 senior citizens a day.
State and federal grants provided more than $1 million for construction, Jones said. The rest was raised through efforts coordinated by a private fund-raising firm.
