Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi appointed Josephat Karanja as vice president and home affairs minister, replacing Mwai Kibaki who had been vice president since Moi came to power 10 years ago. The switch followed rumors of a rift between the two men in recent months. Kibaki, who won reelection to his parliamentary seat in this week’s election with more than 98% of the vote in his district, dominated by Kenya’s majority Kikuyu tribe, was demoted to health minister. Karanja, representing a Nairobi district, had been deputy minister of science and technology. Moi also named a new foreign minister, Robert Ouko, replacing Zachary Onyonka.
