Local News in Brief : Wrongful Death Accord
The Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to a $120,000 settlement in a wrongful death suit brought by the family of a man who was mistakenly shot when sheriff’s deputies attempted to foil a robbery.
The victim, Pedro Carrillo, had stopped for gas at a service station in the Willowbrook area on the night of Dec. 30, 1983, and found himself in the middle of a confrontation between deputies and two robbery suspects.
Several deputies had been watching the armed suspects at the gas station, which had been the site of numerous robberies, according to a county report. The deputies moved in when it appeared that the men were about to rob Carrillo as he stepped from his van to pump gas. When one of the suspects drew his pistol, a deputy fired his shotgun at the gunman but hit Carrillo instead, killing him instantly. The gunmen were later caught, county officials said.
