Portugal Bird Flies Home--on Jetliner
BIRMINGHAM, England — A bird that apparently was blown 1,000 miles off course was flown back to its place in the sun with full VIP treatment aboard a jetliner.
The Alpine swift was cared for at a bird reserve until British Airways offered to fly it back to Faro, Portugal.
It was placed in a special box and given a seat on the Birmingham-Faro flight, the airline said Monday.
“It has to be released carefully back into the wild,” said a spokesman. “It will be placed on the ground by a brick wall so it can climb up and get its bearings” in its home territory.
