Doskocil Cos. revealed in an SEC filing that it owns 9.2% of meatpacker Wilson Foods’ stock and that it is weighing a bid for the remainder of Wilson’s outstanding shares. If it goes through with a bid, Doskocil, a sausage and salami maker based in Hutchinson, Kan., will be taking on a company much bigger than itself. Wilson, one of the largest pork and beef packers in the country, had sales of $1.34 billion last year, but it has a poor earnings record and its sales have been declining steadily. Wilson shares jumped $1.375 to $12.125 in over-the-counter trading, and Doskocil rose $1.50 to $7.875. Doskocil said it would consider selling off a number of Wilson’s businesses if it completes a takeover.
