USD Subdues St. Mary’s in Baseball, 5-4

Sean Baron and Parris Sorianello both hit home runs as the University of San Diego held off St. Mary’s College, 5-4, in a West Coast Athletic Conference game Sunday at USD.
Mike Newby (3-3) was the winning pitcher for USD (15-14, 2-3). Mark Riccabona (3-2) took the loss for St. Mary’s (15-16, 2-2).
San Diego State catcher Jeff Champ was 2 for 3, scored a run and had two stolen bases, but SDSU fell to the University of Iowa, 6-2, at Smith Field. Greg Page (1-3) was the losing pitcher.
Gary Fessia went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs in the first game and then picked up the win in the second game as UC San Diego (10-4) swept a doubleheader from the University of Chicago, 10-3 and 8-7, at UCSD.
MEN’S TENNIS
Scott Patridge, J.R. Edwards, Dan Mattera, Mark Farren and Chris Smith all won singles matches to lift the University of San Diego (13-7) to a 6-2 win over the University of Nebraska in the championship of the USD Invitational team tennis tournament.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Jennifer Larking, Aby Brayton and Laura Gonzalez all won singles and doubles matches as host University of San Diego defeated Iowa, 8-1. USD is now 8-7.
