The Nation : Residents Kill Suspect in $20 Robbery
A mob of neighborhood residents beat a 41-year-old man to death after he attempted to rob $20 from two sisters who were shopping in an upper Manhattan bakery. Police said that between 15 and 30 people chased the man, identified as Raymond Carraballo, and cornered him on East 116th Street after he ran from the bakery. The residents pummeled the man with their fists and garbage can covers, police said. Two New York City Housing Authority police officers managed to free the man, who also lived in the neighborhood. He was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he died several hours later. Police said that no arrests were immediately made. Investigating officers said that Carraballo had no previous arrest record.
