The Nation : Mecham Says He Got His Message Out

Gov. Evan Mecham of Arizona said he got his message across in 12 hours of testimony at his impeachment trial and said of other witnesses: “There’s been an awful lot of lying going on.” The governor told a conservative breakfast club in Tucson that his appearance at the trial went “great if everybody was listening and they have a truthful heart.” Mecham, a Republican, ended his testimony Friday, defending himself against a charge of obstructing justice. He denied telling an aide not to cooperate with the attorney general’s investigation into an alleged death threat. Mecham asked each person at the breakfast to contact 100, even 1,000, people and work for a Mecham victory in his recall election May 17.
