Local News in Brief : Driver Killed at Gas Pump
A Torrance man who apparently refused to give up his car to a robber was shot and killed Friday after the two men struggled at a convenience store gas pump, Torrance police said.
Witnesses told police that a man approached the victim while he was standing at a gas pump near his late-model Cadillac and the two men began arguing. Several shots were fired, and the assailant was seen leaving the area in a car, said Lt. Larry Robinson.
When police arrived at the Arco Minimart at 1800 Artesia Blvd. in Torrance about 5:45 p.m. they found the victim, who was 50 years old, apparently dead at the wheel of his car, Robinson said.
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was pronounced dead at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Robinson said.
The killing is under investigation, including whether anything was taken, Robinson said.
