Where to Put Another Airport

Irv Pickler’s commentary (Feb. 7) misses the mark when he supports the proposed study on joint military-civilian use of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. He states that traffic in the area would decrease because “8 million to 10 million air passengers from south Orange County would not need to drive past El Toro to catch a flight.”
Pickler is not taking everything into consideration. With all the new development in south Orange County, there will obviously be a large increase in population and traffic, but does it make sense to have an airport only 5 miles south of John Wayne Airport?
It would make more sense to develop an international airport farther south. This would offset the traffic. With the proposed plan, there will be a great deal more congestion at the interchange of Interstates 405 and 5, already one of the most congested areas of the county.
