Knight-Ridder Inc. said it will elect President James K. Batten, 52, as chief executive on April 15. Batten will replace Alvah H. Chapman Jr., who reaches the company’s usual retirement age of 67 on March 21. Chapman will continue as chairman at the board’s request. The holdings of Knight-Ridder, based in Miami, include 31 daily newspapers.
