Former world middleweight champion Carlos Monzon of Argentina could face life in prison because of new evidence that he may have strangled his former wife, according to lawyers in Buenos Aires.
Alicia Muniz, Monzon’s former wife, died last month at the beach resort of Mar del Plata.
Police initially suspected that she had died after falling from a balcony of her residence following an argument with Monzon.
But a second autopsy, performed at the request of Muniz’s family, showed signs of strangulation.
The evidence could lead the judge handling the case to change the charges from murder to aggravated murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.
