No. 1 Doubles Team Key to Upset as SDSU Women Defeat No. 7 SMU
Julie Tullberg and Dorey Brandt defeated Claire Evert and Michele Christenson, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, in the No. 1 doubles match Wednesday to lift the San Diego State women’s tennis team to a 5-4 nonconference upset over No. 7 SMU.
Tullberg also defeated Evert (Chris Evert’s sister), 7-6, 6-1, in the No. 2 singles match to keep the Aztecs even, 3-3, after singles play.
San Diego State is 8-9.
The Point Loma Nazarene College men’s and women’s teams swept matches at home from Seattle University.
The women won, 8-1, and the men won, 9-0.
Melinda Ainslie of Point Loma won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Traci Reynolds at No. 1 doubles. The Point Loma women are 5-5.
In the men’s meet, Hans Hoegstedt won twice, at No. 1 singles and with Fred Vincent at No. 1 doubles.
The Point Loma men (7-8) have won six in a row.
The University of San Diego women’s team beat Yale, 7-2, at home.
USD’s Jennifer Larking won at No. 1 singles and with Aby Brayton at No. 1 doubles. Tonya Fuller won at No. 3 singles and joined Jill Greenwood to win at No. 2 doubles.
USD improved to 7-6.
VOLLEYBALL
After dropping the first two games, the San Diego State men’s volleyball team rallied to defeat UC Irvine, 9-15, 12-15, 15-3, 15-8, 15-6.
Hugh Foster had 23 kills and Joe Anselmo added 20 for the 11th-ranked Aztecs (12-10).
BASKETBALL
John Gillilan, former boys’ basketball coach at Valhalla and Fallbrook, is putting together a team of San Diego-area players to compete in the Basketball Congress International senior prep tournament, which will be held April 6-10 at the University of Houston.
Boys due to graduate from high school this year are encouraged to try out.

BASEBALL
The San Diego Padres and San Diego State baseball teams will meet at 7 p.m. April 1 in the fifth Jack-In-The-Box Padre-Aztec exhibition game at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
The annual event serves as a fund-raiser for the Aztecs and will be the only exhibition game for the Padres in San Diego.
The Padres have won 3 of the 4 games, with the 1986 game ending in 0-0 tie.
Free tickets are available at Jack-In-The-Box restaurants beginning Monday. There will be a $1 admission charge at the gate.
