Science Applications International Corp. of San Diego received a $1-billion, eight-year contract from the Department of Defense to install computer hardware and software in more than 100 military hospitals for automated management of patient records, a system that will replace largely manual systems. SAIC said it doesn’t yet know how many new jobs will be created. SAIC beat out McDonnell Douglas and Baxter Travenol for the contract after successfully operating a test system in an Army hospital in Ft. Knox, Ky., for one year.
