American Phoebe Mills took the lead after the second of four gymnastics events and held on to edge Svetlana Baitova of the Soviet Union and win the women’s portion of the McDonald’s American Cup at Fairfax, Va.
Mills entered the final event, the floor exercise, needing a 9.475 to clinch the title. She got a 9.925.
Marius Toba of Romania won the men’s top prize, beating second-place finisher Igor Korobchinsky of the Soviet Union. Americans Kevin Davis and Dan Hayden took third and fourth.
