Cal State L.A. Beats SDSU in Baseball
Rex DeLaNuez hit a three-run home run off reliever Jim Gibbs as Cal State Los Angeles beat San Diego State, 11-6, Sunday at Smith Field. Cal State L.A. won twice in the three-game, nonconference series.
San Diego State (10-8-1) scored three times in the second inning, but an inning later Cal State L.A. (7-13) scored four runs against John Marshall (3-1). After the Aztecs tied it, the visitors took control with four in the fourth and DeLaNuez’s home run in the eighth.
Wally Trice pitched seven strong innings to help United States International University gain a 12-4 victory and a split of its fight-marred doubleheader against Temple at Players’ Field.
In the first inning of the second game, USIU second baseman Ron Sargent got into an altercation with Temple’s Ted Dezzi, who had slid into second. Players from both benches joined in the melee, and Sargent, Dezzi and two Temple coaches were ejected.
The Gulls (8-11-1) scored four in the fourth and five in the fifth to back Trice (4-2). For USIU, which had seven errors, Todd Kynett had three hits and three RBIs. Scott Coutts had three hits and Pat Cheek had two.
In the opener, Mike McCarter hit a two-run homer and Bob Sim added a bases-empty shot as Temple (1-3) gained a 10-2 victory.
ROWING
The men’s teams from UC San Diego and San Diego State each defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at Mission Bay. UCSD won by nearly two seconds, SDSU by 21. San Diego State did not face UCSD.
The Cal Poly women beat UCSD by seven-tenths of a second but lost to San Diego State by six-tenths of a second.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The University of San Diego won each doubles match in straight sets to break a 3-3 tie and beat North Carolina, 6-3, at USD.
Aby Brayton, Laura Gonzalez and Christy Drage won matches for unranked USD (5-5). North Carolina entered ranked No. 24 in NCAA Division I.
DIVING
Kristen Walls tuned up for the high school season by capturing two divisions in the Southern California Indoor Diving Championships at UC San Diego Sunday.
Hill, a junior at Monte Vista High School, edged Nancy Brunet, a graduate of UCLA, 402-401.05, to win the open division 1-meter event. She also won the 3-meter division for 16-18-year olds.
