Six Gurkha insurgents were reported killed in a 14-hour gun battle with police Sunday in the northeast Indian tea-growing district of Darjeeling.

The battle broke out when police laid siege to a tea plantation being used as a hide-out by about 200 members of the Gurkha National Liberation Front, the Press Trust of India reported. The Gurkhas set off land mines to break the siege, leaving six dead.

The deaths raised to more than 150 the toll in a rebel campaign over the last 23 months for a separate Gurkha homeland in India, carved out of West Bengal state in the east.
