Local News in Brief : Man, 18, Shot, Stabbed in Brawl at Reception
A wedding reception in North Hollywood turned into a brawl early Sunday when several angry people chased, shot and stabbed a man suspected of opening fire on the guests after he was asked to leave the party, police said.
Guadalupe Montoya, 18, was in serious but stable condition at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. He had been shot in the leg and stabbed in the upper portion of his body, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Harry Mauk said.
Detectives were investigating the incident as a gang-related shooting. Witnesses told police that Montoya was an uninvited guest at the wedding. He was asked to leave the reception at a commercial building in the 13400 block of Saticoy Street and he complied, Mauk said.
But a short time later, about 12:30 a.m., two men approached the reception site. One of them pulled out a handgun and fired into the occupied building, police said. No one was injured at that time, Mauk said.
However, several people, some of them armed with handguns, came out of the building and spotted Montoya, who they thought may have shot at them, police said. They chased him for about a block and eventually shot, stabbed and beat him, Mauk said. Police found him lying in the street next to the curb about one block north of the reception site.
Carlos J. Hernandez, 18, believed to be a guest at the wedding, suffered injuries to his leg from either broken glass or a knife wound, police said. He was treated at Valley Medical Center in Van Nuys and released.
Police still were investigating the shooting Sunday, and no arrests had been made.
