Government programs to take land from crop production have had an effect on farmers’ machinery purchases, according to a new report by the Agriculture Department. In 1987, farm machinery expenditures declined for the eighth consecutive year, although there are signs the downward plunge is leveling off and sales may begin recovering. Machinery sales rose to a record of almost $12 billion in 1979 before beginning a 60% slide to $4.7 billion in 1986.
