Baseball : Stubbs Closes Door for Westminster Win

Westminster High School’s Brian Stubbs struck out two Long Beach Wilson batters to earn a save and secure Westminster’s 7-5 victory Saturday in the second round of the El Segundo baseball tournament.
Wilson (1-1) had one on with one out and the tying run at the plate in the seventh, when Stubbs was brought on in relief of eventual winning pitcher Ryan Klesko (1-0). Stubbs struck out two to preserve the victory.
Westminster (2-0) was led by senior outfielder Ben Mendoza, who had a home run and three RBIs.
In other El Segundo tournament play:
Cerritos 8, Brea-Olinda 0--Cerritos (1-1) had a three-run lead at the end of the second and put the game away by scoring two in the fifth and three more in the seventh. Brea-Olinda is 0-2.
In nonleague games:
Valencia 6, Pacifica 5--Ben Reddel’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored Mike Edwards to give Valencia (1-0) the victory at home.
Huntington Beach 3-5, Arlington 2-3 (first game 8 innings)--The host Oilers (3-0) rallied for two runs in the eighth in the first game. With Arlington leading 2-1, Huntington Beach’s Ryan Mena doubled home Tom Flores to tie the score, then scored on a sacrifice fly.
Saddleback 13-8, Sunny Hills 5-7 (second game 9 innings)--Sean Theren tripled in the ninth inning, then scored on a throwing error to give visiting Saddleback the victory in the second game. In the first game, Paul O’Hearn went 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs for Saddleback (2-0). Sunny Hills is 1-2.
El Dorado 10-9, Ocean View 9-5--Greg Fife drove in six runs to lead El Dorado (3-0) to a sweep at Ocean View. Fife was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs in the first game and 2 for 4 with a double, a triple and three RBIs in the second. Mark Brenner drove in two runs for Ocean View (0-3).
Troy 5-9, Glenn 17-6--Tom Wilson had five hits, two runs scored and two RBIs as Troy (1-1) split a doubleheader at Glenn. In the second game, Steve Trachsel (1-0) went the distance for the victory and went 3 for 3 with an RBI.
Costa Mesa 5-8, Bolsa Grande 0-6--The Mustangs swept their season-opening doubleheader at Bolsa Grande. Scott Snedeker, a senior left-hander, struck out nine in five innings and went 2 for 4 with an RBI in the first game.
