Fernando Bujones will dance in June at the Orange County Performing Arts Center as a guest with the National Ballet of Canada, The Times has learned.
The 32-year-old international star will appear as Lensky in two performances of John Cranko’s “Onegin” during the company’s June 7-12 engagement in Costa Mesa, a National Ballet spokesperson confirmed Monday. The specific dates, to be announced, will mark Bujones’ only Southern California appearances with the troupe.
Bujones, born in Miami, first captured international attention at 19 when he won a gold medal at the Varna International Ballet Competition in Bulgaria. He was a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre until August, 1985, reportedly leaving because artistic director Mikhail Baryshnikov had refused to commission a ballet for him.
Bujones since has danced with the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden, and the Stuttgart, Paris, Vienna and La Scala Opera ballets, among others.
